In Week 09 of Advanced 3D Computer Animation, Professor Ting Liu introduced professional practice and industry preparation. The session focused on how the 3D animation and VFX industry operates, how recruitment processes work, and what studios expect from artists entering the profession. She explained topics such as internships, job applications, salary expectations, workplace responsibilities, and long-term career planning. The discussion also covered how to evaluate whether a company’s values and future direction align with personal career goals.
Step 1: Understanding different Industry Experiences
During the session, I listened to industry-related examples and participated in discussions with other students about their experiences. I learned about different studio structures and how artists progress through various roles during their careers. I also reflected on the type of work I would like to pursue after graduation, particularly within animation, cinematic storytelling, and visual production. The discussion encouraged me to think beyond technical skills and consider professional development as part of my future practice.
Step 2: Networking and Communication
The session also highlighted the importance of communication, adaptability, and maintaining a professional attitude when working within collaborative environments. Ting emphasized that technical ability alone is not enough and that employers often look for artists who can communicate clearly and work effectively within teams.
I found this session useful because it connected academic learning with industry expectations. It helped me understand how career decisions should be guided by both personal interests and professional opportunities. I also gained a clearer understanding of how studios recruit artists and what skills I should continue developing alongside animation. Moving forward, I want to strengthen both my artistic abilities and my professional presentation so that I am better prepared for future employment opportunities.
