In Week 06 of Experimental 3D Computer Animation, Professor Serra Özdemir introduced me to the Unreal VCam application and its integration with Unreal Engine. The session was conducted remotely and focused on understanding how virtual cinematography can be achieved using a mobile device. The workshop explored how a smartphone can function as a physical camera controller, allowing realistic camera movements to be transferred directly into a virtual environment.
Step 1: Installing the Unreal Vcam
Serra demonstrated the complete setup process of Unreal VCam, including how to connect the mobile application with Unreal Engine, activate the required plugins, and synchronise the phone’s movement with the virtual camera. I studied how the movement, rotation, and positioning of the phone could control the camera inside Unreal Engine in real time. This creates a much more natural camera performance because the movement contains small human imperfections, similar to a handheld camera in live-action filmmaking.
Step 2: Importing the Environment
I downloaded a street environment and used it as my virtual set. After setting up the Unreal VCam connection, I experimented with moving around with my phone while controlling the camera inside the Unreal scene. I explored different camera movements, walking shots, and angles to understand how physical movement translated into digital cinematography.
The results were particularly interesting because the camera movement felt organic and realistic. Unlike manually animating camera keyframes, the Unreal VCam captured natural hand movements, small shakes, and the subtle imperfections of a person physically carrying a camera. This created a stronger sense of realism and made the virtual environment feel more like a live-action scene.
This workshop expanded my understanding of virtual production techniques and real-time filmmaking. It demonstrated how modern tools such as Unreal VCam can merge traditional cinematography practices with digital environments, providing more intuitive and realistic approaches to camera animation and storytelling.
