In Week 11 of Advanced 3D Computer Animation, Professor Ting Liu Ting Liu introduced Lip sync animation and explained its importance in character performance. She explained how lip sync forms one of the most challenging parts of animation because it requires precision between sound and facial movement. She demonstrated the workflow starting with animation on twos, where each pose holds for two frames to maintain readability and smooth timing.
The process then moves into structured stages including:
a) Jaw opening
b) Phoneme mapping
c) Final polish.
She explained jaw opening as the foundation of lip sync. I learned how the jaw must follow audio rhythm closely, with natural downward and backward movement. Phonemes were introduced as specific mouth shapes linked to sound groups. Vowels such as A, E, I, O, and U require distinct mouth positions, while consonants like M, B, P, V, and F require stronger closure and hold for two frames to avoid sharp motion. Tongue based sounds such as T, S, D, and L also require controlled holds for clarity and readability.
Step 1: Choosing the Dialogue
I started planning my assignment using the audio provided by Ting Liu:
a) Dialogue
You seem like someone who deserves to be happy, so wipe that frown off your face and go live your life.
b) Audio
Step 2: Recording the Reference
Step 3: Developing the Animation
I created rough lip sync blocking and basic body movement planning, marking key poses every few frames. I focused on timing and general rhythm rather than full detail animation. I also explored initial camera planning to match performance direction.
Step 4: Receiving the feedback
After submitting my animation, I received strict feedback from Professor Ting that:
“Your camera framing is improved compared to previous version. staging is better.”
“Avoid 180-degree camera jumps. keep camera stable at eye level. your reference acting needs emotional intention, not only mechanical movement”
“Performance must include feeling, especially flirty tone must show in every golden pose”
I understood that lip sync requires performance awareness, not only technical mouth shapes, and I need to improve emotional expression inside reference acting.
