In Week 02 of Experimental 3D Computer Animation, Professor Serra Özdemir introduced me to the final project brief for this unit and explained the two experimental pathways available for the final animation project. The project required me to develop a two-minute experimental animation sequence using one of the provided briefs. The session focused on understanding the creative possibilities of each brief and identifying which direction would best support my own artistic and professional goals.
Step 1: Understanding the Project Briefs
The first brief focused on creating an experience or an environment that does not necessarily follow the rules of ordinary reality. It encouraged the exploration of abstract worlds, imaginary spaces, emotions, and unique experiences through experimental animation techniques. The second brief focused on mixed reality, where physical reality would be merged with digital or virtual elements to create an interaction between real and artificial environments.
Step 2: Choosing the Brief
I chose the first brief because it offered me greater creative freedom as a storyteller and director. Since my long-term goal is to work as a director, I felt that developing an entirely original world and designing its visual language would allow me to make more personal creative decisions.
This selection became an important starting point for the development of my final project. It allowed me to begin thinking about the narrative possibilities, visual style, emotional experience, and experimental techniques that could be explored within the animation. Through this session, I understood the importance of selecting a project direction that not only satisfies the assignment requirements but also contributes to my own development as an artist and filmmaker.
The briefing helped me establish the foundation for my final project and gave me a clearer understanding of how experimental animation can be used to create experiences beyond conventional storytelling and realistic representation.
